Project overview
Skilton's is a one-man bakery brand by an Australian veteran educator based in Taipei. Rooted in the founder's philosophy of authentic flavours and indulgence without compromise, the brand defined itself with the motto, “Life is Too Short for Small Portions,” and entrusted me with translating its bold personality into an authentic, iconic visual identity, from logo and typography to concept development.
The process
With the brand's personality and values clearly defined and shared from the outset, the design process for Skilton's evolved quite intuitively.
I illustrated a calm, composed caricature of the founder dressed in an almost cliché, archetypal baker's uniform — a playful nod to the familiar visual language of traditional bakeries, embracing a little nostalgia and cheesiness with intention.
The accompanying hand-drawn flared serif reinforces the brand's authentic, handcrafted character, combining traditional culinary elegance with a contemporary sensibility while subtly paying tribute to its Australian roots.
In a culture increasingly preoccupied with diet trends and low-calorie alternatives, the identity is a celebration of the pristine and uncomplicated happiness found in flour, butter, and sugar.
Outcome & future plans
Shortly after the brand launch, we collaborated with a local pharmacy and health food market in downtown Taipei to introduce the new identity at their openig tea party. The event marked the first public showcase of the logo, receiving a warm response from attendees (when asked about why having sweets for a health food market, we say it’s to remind people that it's been research-proven how cheat days improve sustainable weight control and mental well-being).
Moving forward, Skilton's will continue to grow through new flavour experiments and private catering events, while the visual identity expands into more tactile brand applications, additional colour palettes, and merchandise.
